Dr. Devon Horton grew up on the South Shore, just outside of Bridgewater where he spent summers with his family on Big Mushamush Lake. Those summers spent outdoors together fostered his appreciation for kayaking, hiking, running, woodworking and mechanics. Devon still finds time to enjoy these hobbies and spend time with family.

Devon is an alumnus of the University of Ottawa where he completed an Undergraduate Degree in Biochemistry and Dalhousie University where he completed the Doctor of Dental Surgery Program. During his studies he developed an appreciation for restorative dentistry, applying his meticulous skill in working with his hands acquired from woodworking to the production of functional and esthetic restorations and crowns. He loves that in accomplishing that, he is also able to improve the health and confidence of others. The art of Dentistry for Devon is a way to express his desire to do things that are productive and meaningful but on a fine scale. Fabricating dentures is an example of this, as he finds it incredibly rewarding to produce something that makes his patients proud to show off their smiles.

Devon is thrilled to be returning to Bridgwater where he can be close to his friends and family whilst contributing to the community that helped shape his character. Having the opportunity to join North Street Dental is especially rewarding for Devon. Dr. Gatchell, founder of the practice, played a big role in nurturing his interest in Dentistry by always providing answers to his questions and welcoming him to job shadow. Devon is very excited to be a part of North Street Dental, a practice that encourages innovation while keeping the patient’s health and preferences a top priority.

We look forward to integrating Devon into our excellent team. He brings with him the most cutting-edge treatment modalities and techniques currently being taught, as well as kindness and thoughtfulness that will be felt in each interaction he has with his patients.

We’re the only dental office in Nova Scotia to offer treatment with the Solea V3 Dental Laser system. This state-of-the art system doesn’t usually require local anesthetic, and the laser is silent and vibration-free. Laser dentistry can be used for many procedures, including treating decay, cold sores, and canker sores, removing fibromas (skin tags resulting from biting your lips or cheeks) and recontouring gums. The Solea Sleep system is also effective in treating snoring without the need for surgery.

Benefits of laser dentistry

For most patients, the main benefit of laser dentistry is that it can replace the dental drill. Because the laser doesn’t have any moving parts, it doesn’t make noise or cause irritating vibrations while it’s being used.

Is laser dentistry safe?

Dental lasers are approved medical equipment and are safe when they are being used by a trained professional. The laser uses a focused high-energy beam of light to safely vaporize decayed tooth enamel, and the system doesn’t release any harmful radiation.

Is it safe for children?

Damage or trauma to a tooth can result in injury of the soft inner tissue, leaving it susceptible to infection. This infection can cause pain and lead to the loss of the tooth. We perform root canals to remove the injured soft tissue in order to prevent, or to resolve, infection.

What is root canal treatment

During a root canal procedure a small hole is drilled in the tooth to access and remove the injured soft tissue. The remaining area is then cleaned and sealed to prevent future infection. After root canal treatment the tooth is typically protected by having a crown placed.

Dr. Saxby joined our practice in 2019. She grew up in Bridgewater and returned home to practice dentistry as a way to give back to her community and raise her family.

She attended the Memorial University of Newfoundland and graduated in 2009. After MUN she went on to go to dental school at Dalhousie University, where she graduated in 2014. At Dal she received the CFAO Award for Achievement in Undergraduate Orthodontics for outstanding achievement in the study of orthodontics. She was also her class treasurer. During her time at Dalhousie she volunteered by providing dental services in Northern Labrador and at the North End Clinic, providing care for those in need.

After graduation, Dr. Saxby went into private practice in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland from 2014 to 2016. She returned to Bridgewater in 2016, where she worked in private practice before joining Gatchell Dentistry - which has now become North Street Dental.

Dr. Saxby is passionate about implant dentistry, aesthetic dentistry, and orthodontics. She also enjoys working with anxious patients to help them become comfortable with dental treatments. She has completed her Invisalign® certification and the training necessary for certification to place and restore dental implants. Dr. Saxby is a member of the South Shore Dental Society, Spear Education and CEREC Doctors.

As a Bridgewater native, she loves being a dentist in an area where she has a personal connection with almost every patient she meets. She and her husband James have two sons and they spend most of their free time at the beach. She loves camping, gardening, travelling, and eating and learning to cook international foods (especially Thai food). She’s addicted to cooking shows and she loves to lounge in her hammock with a book when she can find the time. She can’t get enough of watching her boys explore and seeing their personalities develop as they grow up.

Wisdom teeth extraction is done under a local anesthetic, and because it can be a long procedure we often prescribe a sedative as well. After the surgery you may feel some pain and discomfort for a few days. Your dentist will give you advice on how to manage the pain and keep your mouth healthy while you heal.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint between your jaw and your skull. It’s flexible to let you talk, yawn, swallow and chew. Sometimes the joint can become irritated and inflamed, which causes the symptoms we call TMJ disorder. These symptoms can include localized pain in the joint, headaches, a “popping” sensation when you chew, or a clicking or grinding sensation.

Diagnosis

To diagnose TMJ we check your symptoms and examine the joint and your mouth to determine the cause of the inflammation. Common causes include stress, clenching or grinding teeth, chewing gum, bite misalignment, or crooked teeth.

Treatment

TMJ treatment focuses on reducing the stress on the joint. Depending on what’s causing the inflammation, treatment might include orthopedic correction, bite appliances to prevent grinding, medication, massage, or stretching.

Crowns

Crowns are used when a tooth has become damaged or after a root canal treatment. They cover the entire tooth being restored. We provide same day crowns that can be placed in 90 minutes.

Inlays & Onlays

If a cavity is too large to be repaired with a filling we may use a dental inlay or onlay to restore the damaged tooth. The inlay is prepared in a lab and cemented into place. Inlays and onlays restore the strength and function of the tooth being treated. Onlays are a special type of inlay that are used to restore the biting areas of the tooth. In some cases, same day delivery of inlays or onlays is possible.

Bridges

Bridges replace lost teeth with a synthetic replacement tooth that is attached to the remaining natural teeth on either side of the gap. Once in place, bridges restore the even appearance of your smile and support your natural teeth.
